The Benefits of Performance

Just like a school test, cross country race, or other external challenge, music performances and recital preparation can help challenge students to new levels of mastery and intentionality in their preparation and practice skills. Performances can also be a wonderful opportunity for students to share and celebrate their music and accomplishments with friends, family, and fellow peers. Performances can also be an incredibly scary and stressful experiences. For this reason, I emphasis teaching performance practice preparation techniques that go beyond simply memorizing by repetition, as well as teaching students stress and nerve management techniques. As a teacher I am committed to providing and encouraging all of my students, especially those under the age of 18, to participate in recitals and performance opportunities. However, recitals and public performances will never be mandatory and students will never be forced into a performance situation for which they are not thoroughly prepared or comfortable.
