My name is Emily Hayes. I have a Masters in Piano Performance from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School Music. In addition to my personal dedication to music, I have been teaching classical piano for over 15 years. The Lesson Experience

Why take private lessons?

The private lesson experience is highly personalized to each student. Although the individual goals, musical style preferences, and leaning methods will be unique to each student, the piano techniques, sensitivity to musical expression, and foundational musical concepts are universal. The one-on-one lesson experience allows teacher and student to personalize every step of the learning process to build confidence, skill, and comfort in the music learning journey.

What age to start piano?

No one is too young or too old to begin piano lessons. All ages will find in music class a creative and fun outlet, cognitive and physical development, and the further refinement of a rewarding skill.

How to find the right teacher?

There are are 4 key components to finding the right piano teacher.

  1. Find a music instructor for the instrument you or your student is most excited to learn. Keyboard is a wonderful foundational instrument and is often chosen as a first instrument. However, you will find practicing motivation, general excitement, enjoyment, and success much easier to cultivate on the instrument you are most excited to learn.

  2. Seek out educated and specialized teachers. Private music instructors will have performance training in the instrument they are teaching. This might include a bachelors or above, and or the equivalent experience in performance, or performance training programs including but not limited to the Royal Conservatory of Music.

  3. Look for a teacher who will provide guidance and support according to your personal musical goals.

  4. Use trial lessons to find the right personality fit. Music lessons are anywhere from 30min-90+min of one-on-on time with another individual. It is very important that you find an instructor you like and feel comfortable with.

I started piano when I was 6ish and have been playing off and on my whole life (I’m now 70) with a multitude of teachers. I also taught beginning students myself for some years. I’ve had a lot of expereicne both as a teacher and a student. Some 4-5 years ago, Idecided to find a teacher, becasue I wanted more strucutre in my playing. Good fortune led me to the best teacher I’ve hever had

Emily is the rare combination of an excellent pianist and a natural born teacher. She has an uncanny abillity to pinpoint precisely what a student needs next, and then teach with exactly the right combination of words, examples, enthusiasm and support. If you are looking for a teacher, and have the chance to work with her, you are very fortunate. If you’re a beginner, she will give you the best start. If you are an experience pianist, she may open up a whole new world of piano for you. That’s what she did for me, and I’ve very grateful to have a her as a teacher.
